Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry
J Herpe Med Surg 12[2]:48 Summer'02 Book Review 0 Refs

Dr. Kevin Wright & Dr. Brent Whitaker
Krieger Publications, 2001, Malabar, FL

"This book is a must have for anyone housing, treating or interested in amphibians - period! The information in this book is not only complete but also very helpful. If you have ever been faced with an ill amphibian and did not know what to do, buy this book. ... The book contains numerous chapters including: Evolution, Taxonomy, Housing, Diets, Clinical Techniques, Microbiology, Toxicology, Imaging and Surgical Techniques. Twenty-seven chapters in all. There are numerous drawings, black and white pictures and 44 pages of colored plates. The bibliographies from the chapters are quite extensive. Over 50 tables are included and are listed in the Appendix for easy reference. This book is a launch pad for better veterinary practice with respect to amphibians. It will set the standard for medical practice, sample collection and surgery in amphibian practice. ... If you are in private practice and have been turning away amphibian calls, you will now be able to see them with confidence if you utilize this book as a resource. Read the applicable chapters to purchase some specialty items that your clinic might need in preparation for your next patient. Then just start reading the chapters that interest you. ... I know this book took numerous years of hard toil and stress for both authors but the result is well worth it. Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry is a reflection of their knowledge and contribution to the field. I encourage all who may be reading this review not only to add this book to your library but to congratulate both doctors the next time you see them at an ARAV conference for a job well done. My hat's off to you both." Reviewed by Nancy Carpenter, DVM
