- Dystocia is a common medical and surgical problem in captive reptiles. There are many causes, both infectious and non-infectious. Dystocias have been described in snakes, lizards and turtles and both surgical and medical treatments have been used to resolve them. Regardless of the method used there are no reports of live young being naturally delivered after treatment of dystocia. This report describes the successful medical management of dystocia in a Brazilian rainbow boa, Epicrates cenchria cenchria and the subsequent delivery of 18 live neonates, seven days after initial parturition.
