Assistant Veterinarian in Zoological Medicine and Surgery Global Health Programs Wildlife Conservation Society Bronx, NY The Global Health Programs Division of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) announces an opening for an Assistant Veterinarian in Zoological Medicine and Surgery. The position is based at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo, with services also performed at the Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and the New York Aquarium, all located in New York City. These zoos and the aquarium consist of animal collections of over 19,000 individuals of over 1300 species which provides a varied and large patient caseload. The successful applicant will participate in all phases and aspects of zoo medicine and surgery as well as clinical practice (preventative and therapeutic medicine and surgery, quarantine and preshipment procedures, anesthesia, assisting in writing and implementing protocols), and will share on-call, weekend, and holiday duties as necessary. This full-time position provides competitive salary and benefits. Applicants must have a DVM, VMD or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school. Licensure or eligibility for licensure in New York state, USDA accreditation, DEA licensure, and ability to work in the United States are required. Additional prerequisites include at least two years of practical clinical experience in the veterinary care of non-domestic species. Organization: San Antonio Zoo The San Antonio Zoo has an opening for a full-time Associate Staff Veterinarian. This position will be responsible for assisting the Senior Staff Veterinarian in providing medical and surgical care and treatment to a large diverse animal collection of over 750 species with 3500 animals. The Associate Staff Veterinarian implements and monitors the preventative medical health program, and works closely with the animal management staff, Health Center and Nutrition Center supervisors, and the Animal Health Center staff. They will also be instrumental in programs such as Whooping Crane and Atwater’s Prairie Chicken conservation. The qualifications for the full-time veterinarian position is the ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments; a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited institution; current license or the ability to obtain a license within 6 months of beginning employment to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas; Texas Department of Public Safety and Federal DEA clearance to use Class 2 narcotics; USDA accreditation to certify health for interstate and international transport in Texas; and two to three years experience as a veterinarian with the majority of time spent administering to exotic and/or zoo species.
